POETRY IN MY MUSIC REVISITED. AGAIN!

I’ve been reminded of my music of late. I think it is time to revisit it once more. Of the many I’ve written, here are samples of five of my compositions. On the recordings, my voice isn’t what it used to be! (Whose is?)

WORDS AS MUSIC AND “THE SANTA PROJECT”

OK, so after months of riding the fence and thinking “Do I really want to embark on ANOTHER blog?” I concluded – Why Not?

Link to Words As Music

WORDS AS MUSIC is a blog specifically for aspiring lyricists needing some tips, nudges, prompts, lessons or just encouragement to continue their craft. I will try to post a “prompt” on Monday. Every OTHER Thursday we will highlight a different musical wordsmith and their music. Lessons will be smattered around whenever the urge takes me there, but I will try to do at least one every ten days. Exercises and assignments will be featured, and there will be a Glossary highlighting the musical terms we use throughout. A different sort of place. Maybe it will work, maybe not. But I’m taking a shot!

LINK TO I AM SANTA CLAUS

“I AM SANTA CLAUS” is not a dead issue. On the contrary, I’m getting ambitious and have recruited (without them knowing) Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides April P.A.D. prompts  AND those from MIZ QUICKLY’S IMPROMPTU blog to write poems for the book based on these ingenious nudges. I refrained from submitting them to either site, I just felt it would be interesting to complete the series from another batch of fine encouragements.

So, I’ll be a busy little wordy for a while, but don’t worry. I’ll keep you posted on my progress!

I WISH IT WEREN’T TRUE

Lyrics by Walter J. Wojtanik

“Enough is enough”, I heard you say,
and I was a wreck when you went away.
     I wish it were easy,
     I wish it were true,
     You went to my heart,
     I had nothing to prove.
But you had different interests,
and I’ll say it again, I wish it weren’t true.

“I think you’re sweet”‘ I heard you say,
that’s when I figured that you would stay.
     But where did you go?
     You made such a fuss
     I wish it weren’t true
that we would be a bust.
We had different reasons,
and after it’s said, I wish it weren’t true.

    You sold me your lines
and I bought all your goods,
     your sad angel’s disguise
         had me thinking I should,
But here at the end we’re not even friends
I’ve had it with you! (I wish it were true.)

“There’s never enough”, I heard somebody say,
that’s what I thought when I asked you to stay.
     I wish it were easy,
     I wish it were you.
     You had nothing to prove;
     I wish it were true.
And as you cut my heart out
you just left me to shout, “I wish it weren’t true!”.

ANGELS CRIED AT CHRISTMAS

Overwhelmed with emotion since the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, thoughts and prayers for the victims and families have held a dominant place in my heart, which came flowing out as the lyrics of this song. The melody flowed as easily. I will attempt to record it to possibly post a video (or at least an audio clip)

ANGELS CRIED AT CHRISTMAS
Melody and Lyrics by Walter J. Wojtanik

Hearts of joy,
Playing in this world of love and happenstance.
Little minds,
Wanting just to learn of life’s glad circumstance.
Standing on the brink of years,
Standing tall in spite of fears
with open eyes.
Gentle souls; their mothers’ dears,
rained upon with angels tears,
oh, how they cry,
I’ll tell you why…

Another day,
Never knowing what’s in store, so unprepared.
Not the way
Children’s lives are supposed to be; confused and scared.
No one could have guessed their fate,
Mercy came, but much too late
for little ones.
So much love within their hearts,
Just waiting for their lives to start,
Oh, how we cry,
Tell me why.

The angels cried at Christmas,
Hearken angel voices sing a new refrain.
Now every year at Christmas,
Angel tears will fall again in sorrow’s stain.
Come now Angel, it’s okay,
Let love wipe your tears away
though your smile is gone.
Here now Angel, it’s all right,
Every new star shines so bright,
like your love, your light lives on and on.

Your Momma knows,
Deep within she feels your hand upon her heart.
And Daddy knows,
That even though you’re gone, you’re never far apart.
Babies when you left that day,
Angels now where angels play,
All looking down.
Missing Grandma’s warm embrace,
Grandpa won’t forget your face,
So, dry your eyes.
Please, don’t cry.

The angels cried at Christmas,
listen to the angels sing a new refrain.
Feel our love at Christmas,
Angel tears will flow with love ‘til we meet again.
Come now Angel, it’s okay,
Let love wipe your tears away,
though your smile is gone.
Here now Angel, it’s all right,
Every new star shines so bright,
like your love, your light lives on and on.

The angels cried (please dry your eyes)
The angels cried (a tearful sigh)
The angels cry,
Yes they cry at Christmas.

THE POETRY IN MY MUSIC #5

So far, my obsession has been with “Dreams” (A DREAM FOR MY HEART/YESTERDAY’S DREAMS) and now “Eyes” (OPEN MY EYES/SUNSET EYES). Something about this song rubbed certain people the wrong way and that affected my writing in a negative way for a long time. Opinions as to why are welcomed. The lyrics, as always, are listed below. The title is the audio link.

SUNSET EYES

Melody and Lyrics by Walter J. Wojtanik – © 1985

Listening  to  the  sea  birds  call, and  thinking,
as  a  hint  of  nightfall  fills the  skies.
Off  on  the  horizon,  girl, I  see  you .
looking  deep  into  your  Sunset Eyes.

I can  feel  your  amber  arms  caress  me.
the smile  upon  your  face, it  soothes  and  warms.
Glowing face  of  angels,  you   possess  me,
Sunset Eyes protect  me  from  the  storm.

Your sparkling water’s flashing,
your waves are softly crashing here on the sand.
Charging, then returning back to the sea.
Your gentle hands keep falling,
your spraying softness calling, calling my name.
Sunset Eyes return your love to me.

Why is it you tease me with your wonder,
Make  me want to take you in my arms?
Unashamed, you cast this spell I’m under.
Sunset Eyes embrace me with your charms.

Your face is always changing,
expressions rearranging there on the sand.
Chameleon of colors there in the skies.
Our looks are ones of sorrow,
but we’ll be back tomorrow, standing in time.
Gazing deep into your Sunset Eyes.

Listening to the ocean’s song, and thinking,
as a hint of nightfall fills the skies.
Searching my horizon, girl, to see you.
It’s so good to see you, Sunset Eyes.
It’s so good to love you, Sunset Eyes.

I’m so glad I love you, Sunset Eyes.

THE POETRY IN MY MUSIC #3

Everyone needs a goal to shoot for; a dream to achieve. Some dreams remain the elusive prize, and some outlive their usefulness. It’s YESTERDAY’S DREAM that keep us from moving forward. The lyrics are below. Click on the title for the audio link.

YESTERDAY’S DREAMS

Melody and Lyrics by Walter J. Wojtanik – © 1982

Unconvincing lies of strangers,
hidden dangers, of the dreams we used to share.
They tell me, try to tell me that you never cared,
taking me far away, another day… alone.

Silence of the night, it finds me,
and reminds me, of the emptiness inside.
It chills me, slowly kills me to think love has died.
Now that you’re far away, I’ve got to say… it’s true…

I can’t live on YESTERDAY’S DREAMS.
Making plans on yesterday’s schemes.
I’m all over dreaming of yesterday and you!

I’ve heard it said that breaking up is hard to do,
but it’s not half as hard if you know what to do.
So go your seperate way, without the urge to say…I love you.
Leaving me even more, like before so  far away……

Yeah, so now you’re gone, and I’m dealing
with the feeling and the emptiness subsides.
I’m starting from our parting, and I feel alive.
The lies of yesterday, are truth today, because…

I can’t live on YESTERDAY’S DREAMS.
No more plans on yesterday’s schemes.
I’m all over dreaming of yesterday and you!

I’ve heard it said that breaking up is hard to do,
but it’s not half as hard if you know what to do.
So go your seperate way, without the urge to say…I love you.
Leaving me even more, like before so  far away……

Yeah, so now you’re gone, and I’m dealing
with the feeling and the emptiness is gone.
I’m starting from our parting, and I’m moving on.
The lies of yesterday, are truth today, because…

I can’t live on YESTERDAY’S DREAMS.
No more plans on yesterday’s schemes.
I’m all over dreaming of yesterday and you!

THE POETRY IN MY MUSIC #2

Waking up from the dream, there is only one way to go about it.  OPEN MY EYES is the next song I’ll highlight here. We can walk around in this life with our eyes closed to the beauty around us. And until we open our eyes and really see, we miss out on a lot. The lyrics are below.

OPEN MY EYES

Melody and Lyrics by Walter J. Wojtanik – © 2005

Longer than lifetime, you’ve lived in my soul
Here deep inside me I’m blessed by your charms
With you in my arms, I’m feeling alive
And when you hold me, I lose all control

And when I see you, you OPEN MY EYES
Being around you fills me with desire
I’m caught in the fire that burns in your heart
and through your eyes I can see to your soul.

But when I OPEN MY EYES
And see how things could be, how they used to be again
I feel you open up your heart
Making a brand new start, we’ll never part again
OPEN UP MY EYES and make me see

Closer to heaven, my angel and I
That’s how it feels with you in my heart
Right from the start, you’ve taken me in
And when you’re near me, we’re sharing our love

And when I see you, you OPEN MY EYES,
When I hear you, you’re just like a song
Your music and words are the sweetest I’ve heard
And when I sing you, you fill me with love

But when I OPEN MY EYES
And wipe the sleep away, to a bright new day with you
It really comes as no surprise
That even when you’re not here, you’re always near to me
Please OPEN MY EYES and make me see…you.

And so when I kiss you, I OPEN MY EYES
I don’t want to miss that look on your face
I’m lost in your heart, and I’m deep in your soul
And when you love me, you OPEN MY EYES
And when you Kiss me, you OPEN MY EYES.

OPEN MY EYES!

THE POETRY IN MY MUSIC #1

This is my first foray into adding sound to my blog. One of the many forms my poetry takes is as lyrics to my music. Admittedly, my voice isn’t what it used to be (whose is really?). But the message comes through. I chose A DREAM FOR MY HEART as my first submission because we all have dreams we hold close, and whether we achieve them or not, we still strive for that blessed someday. The lyrics are posted. Click on the title for the audio link.

(Give Me) A DREAM FOR MY HEART

Melody and Lyrics by Walter J. Wojtanik – © 2006

I open my eyes to the challenge of life in this crazy world,
And I take on the task, seeking things that I lack, to carry me through.
So I keep my feet moving (never getting me there)
It just seems that people do nothing but stare
And I stay in one place looking up in the air
Searching for signs to clear up my mind, I wish for a dream.

It wasn’t so long that the sound of my song was light-hearted and free,
And the taste of success was as sweet as the rest and so easy to see.
So I’m striving for something I’ve wanted so bad
Putting all of me out there with all that I have
Hoping my gift will carry me far, right up to my star
I wish for my dream.

Give me a dream for my heart to cling to,
Believe in my chance to believe in myself
Dreams for a heart I can sing all my songs to
Give me a chance to believe in my dreams.

I’ll write you the words and I’ll sing from my soul
I’ll put you to music
Living this dream that I’ve cherished so long, for all of my life
So I’m list’ning for something, the beat of my heart,
Feeling determined, right from the star
I’ll take this emotion and leave them on stage, turning each page
I’m living my dream.

Give me a dream for my heart to cling to,
Believe in my chance to believe in myself
Dreams for a heart I can sing all my life to
Give me a chance to believe in my dreams.

Give me a dream for my heart to cling to,
Believe in my chance to believe in myself
Dreams for a heart I can sing all my life to
Give me a chance to believe in my dreams.

Give me a chance, give me a dream.
