KEEP THE CHANGE

You wonder how much it would take
to make your world crumble,
and have you mumbling to yourself incoherently.
You are currently in a good place,
but this guys face tells a different tale:
did he fail at life or did life
fail him? Emaciate, thin and sad,
he surely caught his share of bad breaks.
You take all you have, you are glad to offer
this pittance to one down so low.
No, maybe it won’t turn his life around,
but it might make this one day
a bit better. No veteran should beg
to share in the American Dream
that seems to escape him,
that he sacrificed and fought to build.
You sense he feels strange and nervous,
but you reassure him. You say “keep the change
and thank you for your service!”
