It was rare that the basketball court was open.
But, ever since the incident last term with the broken bottle,
no one played there. The thread-worn uniforms stayed dry;
no one would be bathed in sweat. The coral stain
remained on the concrete where the plume of blood sprayed.
Court was adjourned; no one cared any longer.

Painful read…
Wonderful story – great and yet subtle play on words … Bravo 🙂
dark indeed, yet I sense the customary humour of Walt lurking in the background.
Basketball hooligans… whatever next…? 😀
It is strange that the words triggered such a morbid reaction from your brain. Perhaps it was a teasing shock tactic on your part!
Well spun, Walt.
Westside Story, updated for today’s readers. Nice one, Walt.
Nice story, Walt. Incident and term gave me the most trouble. You serve them up well.
Excellent gymnastics with the words, Walt. And quite a story in the doing,
Elizabeth

So the court is cursed now! Ah.
Wow. Well done!
Excellent Walt – you went somewhere I didn’t even consider – I love it when that happens; “open court” has so many interpretations and this one is both profound and poignant … nicely done

ah, harsh, but oh so well done
I was reminded of the scene in “West Side Story” here, Walt. Excellent story telling in such a compact piece.
Pamela
This is compactly (not a word, I’m sure) brilliant.
This list gave me pause. Took me over a week to finally finesse them into something readable. You, my friend, make it look easy. Well done!
I love your play on the words of your title. It is sad, but well stated, Walt.
