MY HEART SLEEPS

May your whispers be softer
than a leaf of grass,
and nestle effortlessly
into my tired ear. No fear
graces this night,
and gentle ruminations
from your breathed sighs
calm my emotions.
You have nursed and nurtured,
faint murmurs of your tenderness
find me as I seek a safe
and wanted nesting place;
my ear pressed to your chest,
connected to your pulse and rhythm.
Comfort presented at your breast,
a sanctuary that my heart defends.
And in the end, your shared peace
gives my heart rest. A most blessed slumber.

Offered at dVerse Poets Pub – MTB: Sleep

**In celebration of the Chilean Miner Miracle, today I have chosen Chilean poet,
Gabriela Mistral from her work, “The Sad Mother”.

THE SAD MOTHER by Gabriela Mistral

Sleep, sleep, my beloved,
without worry, without fear,
although my soul does not sleep,
although I do not rest.

Sleep, sleep, and in the night
may your whispers be softer
than a leaf of grass,
or the silken fleece of lambs.

May my flesh slumber in you,
my worry, my trembling.
In you, may my eyes close
and my heart sleep.

  1. Thanks Viv. My words had been stagnating of late, and this venue has been a needed and welcome sanctuary. Glad I can release works as these and be appreciated for them. As for "trying something new", I am glad to have found your work as well!

  2. Nice poem by Mistral giving the gift of sleep to a beloved child. I like how you used the softness of grass and took the role of the sleeping child. Lovely response to Mistral’s poem.

    1. So true of Vivienne. Seeing her comment steered my in my decision to choose this particular poem. It remind me that she remains with us in spirit. I miss that gentle soul. Thank you for your comment on the poem as well, Björn.

  3. Two for one, Walter, and you’ve introduced me to a Chilean poet! I was also touched to read VvinFrance’s comment. I love the thought of whispers nestling effortlessly into a tired ear connected to a lover’s pulse and rhythm. Peaceful.
